Efate Map, Vanuatu
Efate Island hosts Port Vila, capital of the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific between Fiji and Australia. Efate's mountainous interior is shrouded by thick rainforest, while along the coast are large coconut plantations with tropicalized cattle grazing beneath the palms.
A 132-kilometer road circles Efate Island, passing Havannah Harbour between Lelepa, Moso, and Efate islands, Emua where small boats from Nguna and Pele island land, and the site of the former manganese mine at Forari.
All of the large resort hotels are in the vicinity of Port Vila, including Erakor Island Resort, Le Lagon Vanuatu Resort, and Le Meridien Resort on the Erakor Lagoon, and Iririki Island Resort and Chantilly's on Vila Bay. Many smaller hotels, such as the Melanesian Hotel, Mangoes, Poppy's, Breaka's, Olympic, and the Kaviti Village Motel are scattered around town. For backpackers, there are Kalfabun Guest House, Tree Tops Lodge, and several others.
Visitors can take a day cruise to Havannah Harbour, rent a car to drive around the island, sign up for an ecotour to Pele and Nguna, or board a Vanair flight to any of the other islands of Vanuatu. Port Vila has many fine restaurants, gambling casinos, two golf courses, several scuba diving companies, and numerous small bars, night clubs, and cafes. It's probably the most beautiful and stylish South Pacific capital city.
