Historic Map of Melanesia
This historic map of Melanesia appeared in Volume III of Domeny di Rienzi's 1836 work, Océanie ou Cinquième Partie du Monde. Drawn by the French geographer Thunot Duvotenay (1796-1875), the map labels Indonesia as Malaisie (Malaysia). Contrary to current usage, Australia is included in Melanesia and Fiji is called the "Grand Archipel Melano-Polynesien". The location of the various island groups is remarkably accurate for the time. |
